Frequently Asked Questions

Club Sign Up

We will open more time slots as range capacity allows but cannot provide any guarantees for when that will be or how many we will be able to open. Ideally more can open throughout the semester, but again it is a matter of range capacity. If/when more open, we will make an announcement.

Please direct message one of our club staff through Discord or email archery.harthouse@utoronto.ca. Do NOT message the wider Discord channels.

We do not permit ticket swaps. Our system keeps a record of the person who signed up for the ticket, and if someone shows up and that information doesn’t match they will be turned away. Again, if you cannot attend your slot, please DM one of our club staff through Discord or email archery.harthouse@utoronto.ca so that we can reopen the spot and let someone else book it.

10 people. This will not change in the foreseeable future as it is set to keep things manageable for our staff and for safety/equipment reasons.

Returning members do not need to complete Safety 1 and 2, you will be able to “re-purchase” membership and come back to the range when it is open.

The process is the same regardless of what university you’re coming from. Once the sign ups are released, we will allow people to sign up for safety lessons where it will simply ask you to pick a time slot. Do note that if you’re not a university of Toronto student, our club does have a semesterly/annual fee! Fees have generally been $125 annual or $75 semesterly, but is subject to change by Hart House.

Archery Gear

Yes, but any personal gear must be inspected by an equipment officer beforehand. Ideally base guideline is to have a draw weight of less than 40lbs and bullet or field point style inserts for arrows but you’ll still need to check in with Club Staff to confirm.

This depends. We generally don’t recommend getting your own gear right from the get go due to a varying degree of factors. Our club has club gears that you may borrow during club hours. If you are committed to getting your own gear, feel free to ask and we can recommend you something. Otherwise we would recommend visiting an archery shop to have them set you up with a recommendation.

We don’t allow any storage at the range, however Hart House allows you to rent lockers for a semester that can be an option

We generally recommend you start at low poundage; generally below 20lbs if you’ve never done archery before. This is mostly to prevent personal injury and/or potential injury to others as a result of not being able to handle the draw weight indicated on the bows. Otherwise if you’ve taken a break from archery for a while, we’d recommend going to a lighter draw weight to build back up. We have bows ranging from 15lbs to 25lbs* at the club.

No. It is illegal to fire a crossbow anywhere in Toronto as it is legally considered a firearm

Range Information

Unfortunately, no.

Yup, we’ve got the occasional fun shoots, in-house tournaments and generally a competition (off site) with other universities towards the end of the year.

Feel free to approach our club staff wearing a Coach tag. We would all be glad to help, or at least point you in the direction to get more help. If you have something specific you want to work on, let us know, we have certified coaches in the club that can help you in all aspects of archery, whether that is traditional, barebow, olympic recurve, or compound.
